Employment Advice

There are many rights people have at work. These range from protection against unfair dismissal and discrimination to rights to minimum notice of dismissal, payment at the rate of the National Minimum Wage and protection against unauthorised deductions from wages.

You can obtain free advice on employment issues at the centres detailed at the bottom of this page they provide free legal advice to those who live, work or study in Tower Hamlets.

Employment Tribunals

Most claims are taken to a specialist employment law court called the Employment Tribunal. If you are successful the Tribunal can award compensation usually reflecting the financial loss that you have suffered. There are strict deadlines to bring claims. In most cases this must be received by the Employment Tribunal within 3 months of the matter you are complaining about. You need to complete a Claim Form and must pay a fee if you are successful, the Employment Tribunal can order your ex-employer to refund any fees you have paid.

ACAS Early Conciliation Scheme

Before you can bring a claim in the Employment Tribunal, you must first apply to the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (‘ACAS’) under the Early Conciliation Scheme. Once you have made an application then if it is not possible for the matter to be resolved under the Scheme, ACAS will issue a Certificate Number which will allow you to bring an Employment Tribunal if you wish to go further.
