Money and Debt Advice

There are lots of fee charging debt advice services but you can access free, impartial information and guidance on money matters from a number of excellent advice providers. The debt advice services can give free assistance on all debt matters such as council tax debts, court actions and credit debts. Some can offer support on money management.

Self Help and National Debt Advice Services

There are some excellent publicly funded, free, independent websites that you can use to sort out your debt problems yourself. You can do budget sheets, look for ways of maximising your income, and find factsheets and sample letters to use to sort out debt and money problems without going to an advice centre. Be aware that there are a lot of organisations that charge for debt advice, the following are free and easy to use.

Local Debt and Money Advice

Specialist Debt Advice Agencies can help with a wide range of complex debt problems including: credit or store cards debts, council tax arrears, catalogue or hire purchase debt, overdrafts, court fines, rent or mortgage arrears, utility debts etc. They will advise you on whether you are liable for the debt and outline the options available to you regarding repayment agreements, debt management plans, Debt Relief Orders and bankruptcy.

Capitalise Hub

New London-wide debt advice line funded by The Money Advice Service (MAS).  Anyone living, working or studying in London, who has money worries, debt or needs advice on unmanageable bills or threats of court action over debt, can call us directly and we can help.  They will receive a short assessment over the phone and then be given an appointment or transferred directly to a telephone provider of advice. We are even able to provide home visits for clients with health conditions, use interpretation for those whose primary language is not English as well as those with hearing impairments.

Lines are open 9am – 9pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and 9am – 5pm Tuesdays and Fridays.

A number of local advice agencies also provide support with budgeting and money management. You can get one-to-one support or attend a workshop on money management on:
